Private Label 60 ml Rosemary Hair & Scalp Oil Development Case Study

Private Label 60 ml Rosemary Hair & Scalp Oil Development Case Study

This real private label project shows how KINODIN supported the development and production of a rosemary-led botanical hair and scalp oil with a lightweight sensory direction, 60 ml amber packaging and targeted scalp application accessories.

Project Overview

The client was developing a retail-ready botanical hair and scalp oil positioned around rosemary, with supporting oil ingredients such as jojoba and castor oil. The product needed to combine a recognizable botanical concept with a user experience suitable for regular scalp application.

Key Project Requirements
  • 60 ml retail format
  • Rosemary-led botanical oil concept
  • Jojoba and castor oil positioning
  • Lightweight, non-sticky and non-greasy sensory direction
  • Amber bottle presentation
  • Dropper dispensing
  • Additional targeted scalp application accessories

The Development Challenge: Botanical Positioning Without a Heavy Feel

Botanical hair oils can become too rich if formula decisions are driven only by ingredient recognition. In this project, the sensory target was just as important as the ingredient concept.

Castor oil can contribute body and richness to an oil system, while other oils can influence spreadability, shine and after-feel. The development direction therefore focused on balancing the overall oil system rather than simply maximizing the number or level of recognizable botanical oils.

Sensory points considered during development:
  • Initial spreadability
  • Residual greasiness
  • Scalp feel after application
  • Amount of oil delivered per use
  • Fragrance and natural raw-material odor
  • Overall suitability for repeated scalp application

Rosemary-Led Oil System

The product was developed around a rosemary-focused positioning supported by other botanical oils. For private label projects, KINODIN evaluates botanical ingredients not only for label appeal, but also for their impact on odor, color, viscosity, oxidation stability and sensory performance.

In this case, jojoba and castor oil contributed to the overall product concept while the complete oil system was evaluated for balance and usability.

Important formulation principle

A strong botanical story should still produce a commercially practical formula. Ingredient selection, sensory profile and packaging need to be developed as one system.

60 ml Amber Bottle and Dropper Packaging

The selected retail presentation used a 60 ml amber bottle with a screw closure and dropper system. The amber format supported the botanical positioning while also providing a more suitable presentation for an oil-based formula than a purely decorative package.

Packaging evaluation considered:

  • Dropper fit and closure integrity
  • Dose control
  • Formula viscosity
  • Potential leakage during handling and transport
  • Compatibility between formula and package components
  • Retail presentation and label area

Targeted Scalp Application Accessories

In addition to the dropper, the product system included targeted application accessories designed for more precise use around the scalp and hairline.

This is an important private label consideration because packaging can change the perceived performance of a formula. A controlled applicator may help a consumer place the product more accurately and avoid applying an unnecessarily large amount of oil.

Sample Evaluation and Product Confirmation

Before commercial production, the project was evaluated through the sample stage. The aim was to confirm not only the ingredient direction, but also the complete use experience.

Sample evaluation focused on:
  • Oil texture and spreadability
  • Absorption and after-feel
  • Residual greasiness
  • Fragrance direction
  • Visual appearance
  • Dropper performance
  • Overall packaging and product presentation

From Approved Sample to Commercial Production

After the formula and packaging direction were confirmed, the project moved into commercial production. The approved product specification was then used as the reference for bulk manufacturing, filling, packaging assembly and finished-product inspection.

Quality control for an oil-based product includes more than checking fill volume. Appearance, odor, batch consistency, closure performance and leakage risk are also important parts of the final product evaluation.

What This Case Demonstrates

A successful private label rosemary hair oil project requires coordination between botanical positioning, oil-system design, sensory performance, dose control, packaging compatibility and commercial manufacturing. These decisions are most effective when they are evaluated together rather than separately.
