How KINODIN Developed Rosemary and Lavender Hair Wax Sticks

Confidential Client Case Study · Hair Styling

From One 75g Hair Wax Stick Platform to Rosemary and Lavender Scent Identities

How KINODIN coordinated fragrance selection, styling performance, packaging color and production control to create a recognizable private label hair wax stick range.

75g Twist-Up Format Rosemary Scent Lavender Scent Custom Milk-White Bottle

Direct answer: KINODIN developed a scalable 75g private label hair wax stick platform with two clearly separated sensory identities: a pink-coded rosemary-scented version and a gray-coded lavender-scented version. The project also supported alternative fragrances and a custom milk-white bottle. Instead of treating each SKU as an unrelated product, the range was developed around one controlled styling format, allowing the brand to expand its assortment while keeping application, filling, packaging function and quality-control requirements consistent.

Confidentiality statement: The customer’s brand, destination market, order quantities, commercial terms, artwork, barcode, QR code and proprietary formula details are withheld. Selected project information has been generalized to prevent reverse identification.

Project Overview

Hair wax sticks are convenient because consumers can apply the product directly to flyaways, hair edges and areas that need smoothing without scooping wax from a jar. However, the format is visually crowded. Many products use similar cylindrical containers, comparable filling weights and nearly identical styling language. The customer therefore needed more than a standard label change: the range required recognizable scent and color identities that could still be manufactured through a controlled production platform.

The project sits within KINODIN’s broader private label hair styling product manufacturing capabilities. It also demonstrates how a wax stick can be developed as a distinct format within a wider hair pomade and hair wax range.

The Problem: Differentiate a Familiar Format Without Creating an Unstable Product Family

A hair wax stick may look simple, but its user experience depends on several connected variables. The wax must rise and retract through the container, glide across the hair without excessive pulling, deposit a controlled amount and provide enough grip to smooth short hairs. At the same time, it should avoid an unpleasantly greasy finish, excessive buildup or visible residue.

Fragrance creates an additional development challenge. A scent that smells appropriate in a bottle may change when incorporated into a wax-rich base. It can become weaker, sharper or less balanced after storage. Increasing fragrance strength without evaluation can also alter the sensory character of the product.

The customer wanted two easily recognizable products rather than two labels wrapped around an undifferentiated item. The commercial brief therefore had four connected objectives:

  • Create a rosemary-scented version with a pink visual identity.
  • Create a lavender-scented version with a gray visual identity.
  • Retain a consistent 75g direct-application styling format across both products.
  • Keep the range open to future fragrances and alternative bottle colors, including milk white.

The Solution: Build Two Sensory Identities on One Controlled Wax-Stick Platform

1. Establish the Styling Experience Before Finalizing the Scent

The functional role of the product was defined first: direct application for smoothing flyaways, controlling short hairs, refining hair edges and supporting sleek everyday styles. This gave the project a clear performance target for glide, deposit, flexible control and finish.

The approved wax-stick platform then provided a common technical foundation for the two scent variants. This approach is more manageable than developing unrelated bases because the brand can preserve a familiar application experience while using fragrance and packaging to create different personalities.

2. Create a Rosemary-Scented Pink Variant

The pink-coded SKU was paired with a rosemary scent. The aromatic, herbal direction gives the product a fresh and recognizable identity without requiring a medicinal or hair-growth claim. The fragrance is part of the sensory positioning of the styling product.

Important claim distinction: “Rosemary scented” describes the fragrance direction. It should not be presented as a rosemary-oil, rosemary-extract or hair-growth product unless those ingredients and the intended claims are confirmed by the final approved formula and destination-market requirements.

3. Create a Lavender-Scented Gray Variant

The second SKU used a lavender scent and a gray visual direction. This created a calmer, softer identity that was clearly separated from the pink rosemary version while retaining the same essential product format.

As with the rosemary version, the public-facing description should distinguish fragrance from active ingredients. A lavender fragrance does not automatically mean that lavender oil or lavender extract is present, and it does not by itself support scalp-soothing or therapeutic claims.

4. Keep Fragrance and Packaging Extensions Open

The same development framework can support other fragrance directions, subject to sample approval and formula compatibility. Potential directions may include fresh, floral, fruity, herbal, citrus, sweet, woody or fragrance-free concepts. Rather than promising that every fragrance behaves identically, KINODIN evaluates each selected scent in the final base and packaging.

Packaging can also be adapted. In addition to silver, pink-coded or gray-coded presentations, the project demonstrated the option of a custom milk-white bottle. Label material, printing method, bottle color, cap fit and final visual contrast must be coordinated as one packaging system. Brands can review these options through KINODIN’s OEM and private label hair care services.

Validation: What Had to Be Checked Before Production

A scent variation should not bypass product testing. The approval process was organized around the complete consumer experience and the interaction between formula, fragrance and packaging.

Glide and deposit
How smoothly the stick moves across the hair and how much product it releases.
Hold and finish
Flyaway control, flexibility, shine level, greasiness and visible residue.
Scent character
Initial strength, balance in the wax base and fragrance perception after storage.
Temperature behavior
Resistance to unacceptable softening, sweating, cracking or difficult application.
Container function
Twist mechanism, cap fit, product movement and compatibility with the filled stick.
Production consistency
Appearance, fragrance, filling weight, label position and finished-pack inspection.

Packaging artwork also required practical review. Product name, directions, cautions, net contents and ingredient declaration should be checked before printing. For a solid product filled by weight, the net-content presentation should follow the applicable rules of the destination market rather than automatically using a fluid-volume statement.

After the selected fragrance and packaging combination was approved, the project moved into production with finished units filled in the selected cylindrical stick format. Batch checks focused on the approved sensory reference, packaging appearance and functional operation rather than color alone. More examples of this manufacturing approach are available in KINODIN’s hair styling case studies.

The Result: A Repeatable Product Family, Not Just Two Label Designs

The project produced a two-SKU hair wax stick family with clear scent and visual separation. More importantly, it established a practical structure for future line extensions. New fragrance concepts can begin from a defined 75g format while still receiving their own scent evaluation, packaging approval and finished-product checks.

Project outcomes

  • Two differentiated scent identities built around one familiar styling format.
  • Rosemary and lavender fragrances communicated accurately without unsupported botanical claims.
  • Pink and gray visual coding created clearer SKU recognition.
  • A milk-white bottle provided an additional private label packaging direction.
  • The platform remained open to future custom scents and market-specific presentation.
  • Production control covered formula feel, fragrance, filling and packaging function.

This case illustrates why private label styling development should connect product performance with sensory and visual identity. KINODIN’s role extended from fragrance and packaging coordination to production execution and repeat-order consistency. What This Case Means for Private Label Buyers

A buyer does not always need a completely different formula for every new SKU. A controlled platform strategy can be more efficient when the core application and performance target remain similar. Differentiation can come from the approved combination of fragrance, finish, packaging color, artwork and product story.

That does not mean that a new scent can be added without evaluation. Fragrance may influence odor balance, sensory perception and, in some systems, product stability. Each version should be sampled in the actual base, filled into the intended container and reviewed after appropriate compatibility and stability assessment.

For an efficient project brief, buyers should define the intended hairstyle, hold level, finish, fragrance family, scent strength, filling weight, packaging color, decoration method, destination market and expected order quantity. KINODIN can then recommend an established platform or a custom-development route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can KINODIN customize the fragrance of a hair wax stick?

Yes. Rosemary, lavender and other fragrance directions can be evaluated. Final availability depends on the scent brief, formula compatibility, target market and sample approval.

Does rosemary scented mean the formula contains rosemary oil?

No. A rosemary scent describes the fragrance profile. Rosemary oil or extract should only appear in the product story and ingredient list when it is deliberately included in the approved formula.

Can the bottle be customized in milk white?

Yes, a milk-white bottle is one available direction. Feasibility, color matching, decoration method, MOQ and lead time depend on the selected component and supplier requirements.

Can hold strength and shine be adjusted?

They may be adjusted through formula development. The buyer should define the intended hairstyle, hair type, hold level, finish and benchmark experience before sampling.

Can KINODIN create more than two scent variants?

Yes. A broader fragrance range can be planned, but each scent should be evaluated in the final wax base and approved packaging rather than assumed to perform identically.

What should a buyer provide to request samples?

Provide the target market, desired hold and finish, fragrance direction, filling weight, preferred bottle color, artwork requirements, expected quantity and any benchmark product or sensory target.
