From Market Reference to an Independent Precision-Pump Texture Powder

How KINODIN helped a men's grooming company move beyond a reference sample and develop its own 2g texturizing powder—combining a differentiated formula, controlled micro-dosing, original packaging design and production-ready quality standards.

The Client Brief: Use a Benchmark Without Becoming a Copy

The client entered the project with a successful texture powder from the market as a physical reference. They liked the compact format, convenient push-button application and ability to create quick root lift. However, their objective was not to reproduce the reference brand. They needed an independent product that could fit their own men's grooming range, visual identity and product positioning.

This distinction shaped the entire project. A reference sample can communicate expectations for powder flow, application feel, finish and packaging ergonomics, but it should not become a shortcut to copying another brand's formula, claims or artwork. KINODIN converted the sample into a technical brief and rebuilt the product around the customer's priorities.

A useful benchmark defines the expected experience. Product development creates a different, ownable route to that experience.

Step 1: Translating a Consumer Product Into Measurable Targets

Words such as “volumizing” or “matte” are too broad for manufacturing. Before formulation work, the KINODIN team separated the desired experience into measurable development targets:

  • Speed of visible root lift
  • Grip during finger styling
  • Flexible versus firm hold
  • Oil absorption at the root
  • Matte versus natural-looking finish
  • Perceived dryness after application
  • White residue on darker hair
  • Ease of reworking the style
  • Powder flow through the pump
  • Cleanliness around the actuator

This assessment gave the laboratory and packaging teams a common specification. It also allowed the customer to evaluate samples by performance rather than by visual similarity to the benchmark.

Step 2: Building a Differentiated Formula Platform

The finished concept used a concise powder system selected for texture, oil control and styling grip. The ratios and full development details remain confidential, but the work focused on balancing several properties that often compete with one another.

Development target Why it mattered KINODIN's formulation approach
Immediate volume The product needed to lift fine or flat-looking roots with a small dose. Optimized the powder structure and application level for fast, visible texture.
Styling grip Volume without grip disappears quickly during styling. Balanced tactile hold with enough movement for restyling by hand.
Reduced visible residue White cast is especially noticeable on dark hair and in close-up content. Controlled dispersion, dosage and rub-in behavior rather than relying on a “transparent” claim alone.
Oil absorption Excess root oil can flatten the hairstyle. Adjusted absorbent components while avoiding an unnecessarily chalky feel.
Pump compatibility A good bulk formula can still fail if it bridges, compacts or clogs inside the pack. Evaluated powder flow and bulk behavior together with the selected dispensing system.

The result was not presented as a universal formula. Different brands may prioritize stronger hold, softer movement, higher oil absorption, a more natural finish or a shorter ingredient story. KINODIN therefore treats texture powder as a customizable platform. Brands can explore additional options through our private label hair styling powder range.

Step 3: Engineering the 2g Precision-Pump Experience

A 2g product may appear simple, but small net contents create demanding manufacturing tolerances. Minor differences in powder density or fill weight become proportionally significant. The packaging must also deliver a controlled amount without releasing an excessive cloud or leaving powder around the outlet.

KINODIN evaluated the formula and package as one system. The work included:

Powder-flow screening

Checking whether the bulk moved consistently through the internal path instead of bridging, settling unevenly or compacting after handling.

Repeated actuation tests

Comparing early, middle and late pump cycles to identify inconsistent output, blockage or an unsuitable spray pattern.

Fill-control verification

Establishing filling and weight-control procedures suitable for a low-net-weight powder product.

Handling and transport checks

Reviewing cap fit, actuator protection, leakage of loose powder and dispensing performance after simulated movement.

The pump also supported the desired brand position. Compared with an open shaker, it offered more directed application, a cleaner visual presentation and a distinctive consumer interaction. However, the pack was selected for functional compatibility—not simply because precision pumps were becoming popular.

Step 4: Replacing Reference-Led Design With an Original Identity

The early project materials included visual and written cues from the market reference. These were useful inside the development process but unsuitable for a finished commercial product. KINODIN's design team reworked the presentation around the customer's own brand system.

The redesign covered the container treatment, label hierarchy, typography, information layout, product descriptor and front-of-pack benefits. Reference-brand wording and recognizable visual elements were removed. The available label area was carefully organized so that the small bottle could remain legible without appearing crowded.

This is an important part of ODM work: product differentiation does not end in the laboratory. The formula, application mechanism, claims and design must tell one coherent brand story.

Step 5: Preparing the Product for Repeatable Production

Once the customer approved the direction, the project moved from sample performance to manufacturing consistency. Production controls were established around incoming powder materials, packaging fit, filling tolerance, finished-product appearance and dispensing function.

Selected units were checked through repeated pumping because a bottle that works once is not enough. Batch-to-batch comparisons focused on powder flow, styling behavior and visible finish. Packaging inspection also covered print alignment, component cleanliness and assembled appearance.

This integrated process—from development and design to filling and final inspection—is part of KINODIN's broader private label hair care manufacturing service.

The Commercial Value: A Small Product With a Larger Role

The precision-pump powder gave the client more than another styling SKU. Its compact format, distinctive application and clear performance story made it suitable as an entry product within a wider grooming routine. It could be paired with products such as sea salt spray for pre-styling or private label hair clay for additional definition and hold.

For a growing brand, this creates several practical opportunities:

  • Build a recognizable hero product around a memorable application method;
  • Create powder-and-clay or powder-and-spray styling routines;
  • Offer bundles without developing every product at the same time;
  • Use one styling platform to explore different hold and finish profiles;
  • Expand from one product into a coordinated men's grooming line.

What This Case Demonstrates

This project shows why responsible benchmark development is different from copying. The customer supplied a product to explain the desired market experience. KINODIN then performed the work needed to create an independent commercial result:

  • Converting subjective preferences into technical targets;
  • Developing a differentiated texture-powder formula;
  • Matching powder properties to a precision dispensing mechanism;
  • Creating original packaging graphics and product communication;
  • Establishing controls for a challenging 2g fill format;
  • Preparing the concept for repeat orders and future line extensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can KINODIN develop a texture powder from a reference sample?

Yes. A reference can be used to define sensory, styling and packaging expectations. KINODIN then develops a customized route based on the brand's target market, claims, cost and performance requirements. Reference branding and protected design elements should not be copied.

Can the hold, volume and matte finish be adjusted?

Yes. Styling grip, root lift, oil absorption, finish and after-feel can be evaluated during sampling. Because these properties interact, the final balance should be confirmed through side-by-side use tests.

Is every powder compatible with a precision pump?

No. Particle behavior, bulk density, moisture sensitivity and flow can affect pump output. Formula and package compatibility should be tested together before mass production.

Can KINODIN also design the label and packaging?

Yes. KINODIN can support packaging selection, artwork layout and product presentation in addition to formulation, filling, quality control and manufacturing.

Can the powder be developed as part of a wider styling range?

Yes. It can be coordinated with products such as sea salt spray, hair clay, wax or other styling products to create a routine, bundle or multi-SKU brand launch.
